VINs you look up

The instant check-digit and format breakdown happens in your browser. For the full NHTSA record, your browser sends the VIN to our service, which forwards the lookup to NHTSA's public APIs and returns the result. Our edge cache uses the lookup URL, which includes the VIN, and may retain decoded responses for up to 30 days. Model-year recall and complaint responses may be cached for one day, and ratings for seven days. These cache entries are not linked to a user account or email profile. Requests also pass through our hosting provider and NHTSA; this cache description does not describe those services' separate operational logs.

Shareable result pages put the full VIN in the page URL. That means the VIN can appear in your browser history and in any copied or shared link. Treat those links as sensitive and share them only with people you trust.

Email signups

Automated recall alerts and email signup are currently unavailable on this site. The official NHTSA VIN lookup is linked from the tool and recall pages. Contact us directly if you have a question about information you previously provided.

Analytics & affiliate links

Our click events measure affiliate links, official verification links and report export buttons. They remove VINs and URL query strings or fragments from the recorded page and destination paths. A button click does not establish that a lookup or export completed. When you click an outbound affiliate link (history report or insurance), that third party may set its own cookies and apply its own privacy policy — we don't control those. Outbound paid links are labeled.

Your choices

• You can use the core tools without an account or email signup. A VIN lookup sends the entered VIN as described above.
• You can browse model-year pages without entering a VIN.
• You can email info@vinsleuth.com to ask what we hold or to request deletion.
